BES School Counselor

GO BRUINS!!!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to another successful year at BES!!!  My name is Robert Floyd, and I will be serving as the School Counselor for half of the third grade students and all of the fifth grade students. Also, I am the kicking coach for the varsity football program for BCHS, and this school year will be my 26th year as an educator and counselor in the state of Georgia.  I am absolutely excited to be working with the BES students here. I believe that elementary years are important for school counselors to work with parents and students to assist in the growth and development of BES' students. I want to make an impact on the lives of all of my students in the areas of academics, career, personal and social development.

I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and went to college at Georgia College & State University for my undergraduate degree in Psychology. Also, I played four years of collegiate soccer and serve as captain my senior year. After college, I was working in the business world for the next ten years and later decided to go with my heart and enter the education field. I moved to Augusta and earned another undergraduate degree in Health and Physical Education from Augusta University. I worked as a Physical Educator in Richmond County for ten years, and I earned two Masters degrees in School Counseling and in Health and Physical Education from Augusta University,  Next, I worked for Burke County School System as a School Counselor at elementary and middle school level. During that time frame, I earned a Specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University. I am very happy and grateful to be serving the students, parents, school personnel and the community for the Burke County School System. I have been married for thirty-five years to my college sweet heart, and we have two wonderful children. Both of them have graduated from college and achieving their career endeavors. Burke County has a special place in my heart and this place means the world to me.

Sincerely,

Robert Floyd

As a  Counselor I believe:

  • All students have dignity and deserve respect.
  • All students are capable of learning and becoming productive adults.
  • All students have individual learning needs and styles.
  • All students’ differences in regards to ethnicity, race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation should be respected, and all students should feel included in the school community regardless of these or other differences.
  • All students deserve to learn in a safe and nurturing high-quality environment.
  • All students should have access to a comprehensive school counseling program administered by a full-time, state-certified, master’s-degree-level school counselor.
  • The school counselor should serve as a leader and collaborator in assessing students’ barriers to learning and developing strategies to help students find success.
  • The school counselor should use data to design, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve the comprehensive school counseling program.
  • The school counselor should be familiar with and abide by the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors.   https://www.schoolcounselor.org/asca/media/asca/home/SCCompetencies.pdf

How do we work with students?

  • Classroom Core Curriculum (Counseling) -  The counselors go into the classrooms to teach knowledge, skills and attitudes that will help students reach their full potential in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development.
  • Small Group Counseling- The counselors work with students in small group settings to address specific areas of concern. Group availability is selected by the counselor based on the population needs and teacher request. If a group is unavailable, the counselors can work with a student individually.
  • Individual Counseling- The counselors meet with individual students to help solve problems that are interfering with their learning and sense of well-being.
  • Parent and Teacher Consultation- The counselors meet with parents and/or teachers regarding academic, social and emotional concerns.
  • Responsive Services- Includes crisis intervention, consultation, collaboration, and conflict resolution.

This year, I will be focusing on the following issues:

Individual Counseling                                            Classroom Guidance

Conflict Resolution                                                Goal Setting

Attendance                                                              Bullying/Cyber bullying

Bullying                                                                  Career Assessments

Social Skills
